The USS Arizona Memorial is built over the remains of the sunken battleship USS Arizona, the final resting place for many of the 1,177 crewmen killed on December 7, 1941, when their ship was bombed by Japanese Naval Forces. This loss of life represents over half of the Americans killed during the worst naval disaster in American history. Hetrick enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940, and was assigned as a mess cook on the USS Arizona. He survived the Japanese attack on the Arizona, and went on to serve as a torpedo plane mechanic aboard USS Saratoga during World War II. After the war, he transferred to the United States Air Force, serving for another 10 years before retiring in 1961.
